The last time the EPA set a drinking water standard was in 2001. That?s 10 years ago.
So what?s in our water? The Environmental Working Group put together a 3-year study of 20 million tap water test results from water utilities across the country. Here?s a summary of what they found:
? The utilities companies detected 316 pollutants in U.S. drinking water
? There are pesticides and chemicals from fertilizer and animal waste.
? Factory discharge has produced 205 industrial chemicals.
? Polluted runoff and wastewater treatment: 86 contaminants
? The chemicals used in treating our drinking water, and the leaching from water pipes and storage tanks produce 42 byproducts. (In other words, the very chemicals used to Clean our water also Contaminate it!)
For example: Chlorine. Have you ever smelled the chlorine from your tap water? Not only does it smell bad, there are many cancer-causing chemicals that are a result of our water utilities treatment with chlorine.
Organic compounds called HAAS (haloacetic acids) containing chlorine and/or bromine are produced by a chemical reaction of chlorine with natural plant materials. THM?s or Trihalomethanes are also formed when chlorine or other disinfectants are used to control microbial contaminants in our water treatment.
The Environmental Protection Agency listed cancer, liver, kidney and reproductive problems as a result of the formation of chemicals from chlorine alone. Children have experienced developmental problems, and the elderly are also especially vulnerable.
VOC?s or Volatile Organic Compounds like benzene are also present, according to the EPA, in 1/5 of U.S. water supplies. How? Industrial solvents, the dry cleaning industry, septic system cleaners AND Oil or Gas spills. (Have we had any of those lately?) Even skin rashes can be a result of VOC?s and chlorine.
These contaminants can be absorbed into our bodies just by taking a shower.
A Rutgers University study shows that we absorb As Much if not More of these chemicals from showering as we do from drinking water! As if that weren?t bad enough, these chemicals fill the air in our homes and workplaces, creating Unhealthy Air Quality that has been known to severely affect those with asthma or other respiratory conditions.
SO WHAT?S THE SOLUTION?
In 2009, the President?s Cancer Panel suggested that ?individuals and families have numerous possibilities to reduce and?eliminate chemical exposures. For example, filtering home plain tap water or well water can decrease exposure to numerous known or suspected carcinogens or endocrine-disrupting chemicals.? Therefore: Water Filters, and there are filters to fit every need:
? Whole House Water Filters protect against both contaminated drinking water, shower water, laundry water and poor air quality.
? Under Counter Water Filters (either carbon filters or reverse osmosis) can remove up to 98% of contaminants.
? Counter Top or portable Reverse Osmosis water filters are a convenient solution for apartments, RV?s and dorm rooms.
? Shower filters are a quick and easy fix for eliminating a lot of the contaminants we absorb through our skin.
Here?s to our health!
