How climate change destroyed one of the world's largest civilizations

Located in present-day India and Pakistan, the Harappan civilization fell victim to shifting monsoon patterns, a new study has found.?

By Charles Choi,?LiveScience Contributor / May 30, 2012

The mysterious fall of the largest of the world's earliest urban civilizations nearly 4,000 years ago in what is now India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh now appears to have a key culprit ? ancient climate change, researchers say.

Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia may be the best known of the first great urban cultures, but the largest was the Indus or Harappan civilization. This culture once extended over more than 386,000 square miles (1 million square kilometers) across the plains of the Indus River from?the Arabian Sea?to the Ganges, and at its peak may have accounted for 10 percent of the world population. The civilization developed about 5,200 years ago, and slowly disintegrated between 3,900 and 3,000 years ago ? populations largely abandoned cities, migrating toward the east.

"Antiquity knew about Egypt and Mesopotamia, but the Indus civilization, which was bigger than these two, was completely forgotten until the 1920s," said researcher Liviu Giosan, a geologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. "There are still many things we don't know about them." [Photos: Life and Death of Ancient Urbanites]

Nearly a century ago, researchers began discovering numerous remains of Harappan settlements along the Indus River and its tributaries, as well as in a vast desert region at the border of India and Pakistan. Evidence was uncovered for sophisticated cities, sea links with Mesopotamia, internal trade routes, arts and crafts, and as-yet undeciphered writing.

"They had cities ordered into grids, with exquisite plumbing, which was not encountered again until the Romans," Giosan told LiveScience. "They seem to have been a more democratic society than Mesopotamia and Egypt ? no large structures were built for important personalitiess like kings or pharaohs."

Like their contemporaries in Egypt and Mesopotamia,?the Harappans, who were named after one of their largest cities, lived next to rivers.

"Until now, speculations abounded about the links between this mysterious ancient culture and its life-giving mighty rivers," Giosan said.

Man convicted of NJ webcam gay spying apologizes

(AP) ? A former Rutgers University student convicted of using a webcam to spy on his male roommate kissing another man days before the roommate killed himself publicly apologized on Tuesday for the first time.

Dharun Ravi said in a statement issued through his lawyer he was sorry for what he called his "thoughtless, insensitive, immature, stupid and childish choices."

Ravi's roommate, Tyler Clementi, threw himself from New York City's George Washington Bridge in 2010.

Ravi was sentenced in March to 30 days in jail. He said Tuesday he'll start serving his term on Thursday in New Brunswick.

The sentencing judge had criticized Ravi for a lack of remorse and had told him: "I haven't heard you apologize once."

Prosecutors said Ravi's sentence was too lenient.

Ravi, now 20, was convicted of 15 criminal counts, including bias intimidation and invasion of privacy.

Soon after that, letters began pouring in to Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman's chambers making requests for how to handle sentencing. Ravi had faced up to 10 years in prison.

Earlier this month, the judge told him he would have to serve 30 days in jail. Because the sentence is less than a year, it decreases the chances that federal immigration authorities will seek to have Ravi deported to India, where he was born and remains a citizen.

Ravi maintains he is innocent.

NJ Lawmakers Hope to Stop ID Theft Via Copiers

A bill aimed at preventing identity theft through digital copy machines used in banks, doctor?s offices and other businesses is headed to the New Jersey Senate.

Copy Machine

Flickr User Bonner Springs Library

The measure requires hard drives of digital copy machines to be wiped clean before the devices change hands.

The bill?s sponsors say many people aren?t aware documents that have been scanned, printed, faxed or e-mailed on digital copy machines are often stored on a hard drive, sometimes for the life of the machine. They say the measure is an important safeguard, given how often electronics are leased or resold.

Fines would be $2,500 for the first offense and $5,000 for subsequent offenses. Violators would also open themselves to legal action from identity theft victims.

The Assembly passed the bill last week on a 51-28 vote.

Guest Post: Preventing Depression in Birds | All Natural Pet Care Blog

Today?s guest post tackles a common issue with captive birds ? depression.

Preventing Depression in Birds
By Robert Lobitz

Pet birds can be some of the most rewarding pets to own, but they come with a lot more needs and potential problems than other pets, like cats and dogs. One of the most common issues is depression. I know that sounds silly, but birds are sensitive and can easily fall into what we would identify as sadness and depression.

Pyrrhura molinae bird Photo by Rob Speed

Pyrrhura molinae - Photo by Rob Speed

The most common signs of depression in caged birds are pretty simple and very obvious. You will see a loss of appetite, irritability that was not a problem before and feather plucking. Feather plucking can be the most distressing thing you may ever see your bird doing, but it?s not as awful as it seems. Many new bird owners freak out when they walk into the room, their bird cages are strewn with discarded feathers and their birds are naked from the neck down.

So, how do we prevent this unpleasant situation for both our birds and ourselves? The most important thing you can do is to bond with your birds and make sure you have a lifestyle that allows you to spend time with your bird. Birds get lonely very easily and some breeds can even suffer from health issues as a result.

Another one of the best options is to buy parrots in pairs. This, obviously, doubles our costs and the care that you need to have. But, having a companion that is around 24 hours a day will pretty much eliminate the loneliness problem. The only problem from that point is that they may bond with each other more than they will with you.

Lastly, both of these solutions should be coupled with the use of toys and bird mirrors like those you can find at BirdCages.net. Keeping your bird entertained makes a big difference. Also, some birds are tricked by the mirrors into thinking that there is another bird in the cage. It may seem dumb, but it?s effective.

'I believe in e-democracy' - Russia's communications minister ...

E-democracy is about influencing government?s decisions and finding priority issues, recently appointed Communications Minister Nikolay Nikiforov shared with RT?s Sophie Shevardnadze. At 29, he is the youngest member of the new Russian cabinet.

?RT: We?ve seen how powerful the internet is ? it can make revolutions and bring down regimes. How much should government around the world interfere in this domain? Where is the fine line between censoring the internet and go out policy?

Nikolay Nikiforov: The only government interference should be protecting our children from the not allowed content. It should also cover some intellectual property and corporate issues. But it is definitely not about restricting access to certain communication services and websites.

We can positively use this technology to communicate with our citizens. The whole Open Government project in Russia is about that.

RT:Do you believe in electronic democracy?

NN: I do believe in e-democracy, but sometimes it is so much totally focused on electronic elections. I think e-democracy is a wider concept.

I think e-democracy is more about influencing particular government decisions. It is about trying to find priority issues. I believe we can introduce some kind of a federal level regulation on that. Every single government institution should use this data coming from the information system on a daily basis and with the same responsibility as the incoming paper correspondence.

RT: How true there are monopolies on the Russian media market and, if true, is it threatening democracy?

NN: I don?t see any government regulation on the mass-media market in general. Still there is government influence from the government-owned mass media. But there are no actual legal barriers for the mass-media market development. Hopefully, we?re not a country where internet access to certain content and websites is limited, as it happens in many parts of the world. There is [room] for some competition.

RT:How much of a game changer are the new media in Russia?

NN: The access of our households to the broadband internet is definitely re-shaping the way we plan our day, do business and communicate, also on political issues.

Yandex [Russian search engine ? Ed.] has more visitors daily than the First TV channel of Russia. But if we speak about the general coverage of the country, including some far distant villages, television is still the major player if we speak about the media. In large cities? about 78 per cent of the households are already connected with broadband internet access.

RT: Do you see the new media, the internet, aging out the old types of media altogether?

NN: Definitely not completely.

RT:What is your priority at the moment? Broadband access, increasing media freedom or fighting [media] monopoly?

NN: Definitely it is broadband access. It is one of the key infrastructure development issues in every country in the world today. It is probably as important as building roads, bridges and so on.

RT: Intellectual property requires regulation globally. Your predecessor came with an initiative to make all media content on the internet unprotected and virtually free unless a producer specifies otherwise. Are you going to continue this policy?

NN: We have to follow this concept of self-identification on how to protect the content published electronically. We believe we live in the century of the increasing digital connectivity and increasing value of digital content. Publishers should decide on their own how to protect it.

RT: Where is the balance between those who make the content and those who consume it?

NN: We believe the balance is a kind of open market. We want to give all the possibilities to the content producers to decide on that. This is the initiative offered by the ministry.

RT:Do you believe that the world one day could be 100 per cent digitalized?

NN: We can certainly reach [the] possibility to communicate 100 per cent electronically. I believe it is more realistic to be 95 per cent just because sometimes technology could be very oppressing.

Yemen: US drone strike kills 5 militants

(AP) ? A U.S. drone strike Monday aiming for an al-Qaida leader has killed five militants in the country's south as part of a Yemeni offensive against the Islamist group, Yemeni officials said.

They said the airstrike targeted Qaid al-Dahab, a local leader of al-Qaida, in a convoy of three cars near the town of Radda, 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of the capital, Sanaa. Four militants were wounded. The officials said al-Dahab's fate was not yet known.

Al-Dahab's sister was the wife of Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical militant cleric killed by a U.S. drone strike last fall.

There was no immediate word from Washington on the strike that targeted al-Dahab.

On Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta defended drone strikes in Yemen as a measure "to defend and protect the United States of America." He was interviewed by the American ABC TV network.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the movement's most dangerous offshoots. The U.S. considers the impoverished country as a key battleground in the war against al-Qaida.

The terror network has had a presence in Yemen for years, but expanded its influence during last year's political upheaval when millions of Yemenis rallied across the country demanding the ouster of their longtime ruler, Ali Abdullah Saleh. The militant group seized control of several towns in the south during the turmoil.

Earlier this year, al-Dahab's brother, Tariq, led militants who stormed and briefly occupied Radda, They pulled out after authorities released 15 of his men from jail. Tariq was later killed in a family feud.

Later Monday, Yemen officials said seven other al-Qaida militants were killed in southern Yemen, but they disagreed over how they died. Security officials said they were killed in an airstrike, but the military said they were hit by a missile fired from a ship off Yemen's shore. Local tribal officials said the seven militants were in two cars.

Yemen's army is pushing an offensive to uproot al-Qaida-linked militants from their strongholds in the south. The U.S. is aiding the operations. Panetta said its activities "don't necessarily involve boots on the ground," according to a transcript of the interview on the ABC website.

In their offensive, Yemeni government troops have retaken most of a southern provincial capital from al-Qaida fighters.

The officials said Monday that the army holds 90 percent of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, which fell to al-Qaida last year. They say 48 hours of fierce fighting left 22 militants and nine soldiers dead.

They said the army was advancing toward Jaar, another town in militant hands for over a year, in a three-pronged attack supported by heavy artillery shelling and air raids.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

Restaurant Industry: Stolen Cars Statistica in the US

Having a number of quotes in your possession will give you an insight on what type of insurance you should get and where to get it from but aside from your insurance policy, another thing to consider when you are buying a new car is to ensure that it has all the features you want. Your premium is based on a number of factors - the type and model of car you have, your records at the DMV, and your profile. If you want lower premiums, getting a car that is not in car thieves' hot wheels list is a good idea. Sure you'd be insured with it and you can easily replace your car but filing a claim is a very long process so if you do not want to be inconvenienced by your insurer's processes or protocols, better not get any of these top 10 hot wheels. Here is the list of top 10 stolen cars in the United States in 2011 alone:

  • No 10. 2002 Ford Explorer 11, 783 stolen
  • No. 9 1999 Ford Taurus 12, 000 stolen
  • No. 8 1994 Acura Integra Over 12, 000 stolen

  • No. 2 1995 Honda Civic Almost 50, 000 stolen
  • No. 1 1994 Honda Accord 55, 170 stolen

As found in Forbes magazine, thieves have been stealing American-made cars since 2002 - preferring these cars over European ones. According to a report by CNBC, supporting what Forbes magazine has published, thieves steal cars that do not draw much attention that is why you didn't see BMWs on this list.

If you do not have an idea where to get your coverage yet, go to a car insurance quotes comparison site asap. It is a good idea to compare online before buying a car. The good news is, if you get a car that is technologically more advanced than the ones in this list, thieves won't try to steal them. This is because of the security these cars provide. Now that you know which models are the favorites of thieves, you can concentrate on getting a car that is not on this list and then surf car insurance quotes.

I'm so confused and angry! - Adoption.com Forums

My experience was the complete opposite.

When we did respite for our current placement, it was for 4 days. The FM told us she'd be moving and eventually the fd would have to find a new home. This was not the reason for respite, she needed it for buisness. By the time respite was over, hubby and i knew she was meant to be with us. About 4 weeks later(and only doing respite that one time) she moved in with us. The old FM told us that if she had bonding issues or cried for her she would talk to her, or take her on an outing for the day. She technically doesn't move until July

The CW (not mine, the other fm) wanted us to do a long transition, but I and the FM were confident that a quick trans would be better b/c it would be less confusing. That and the fact that she loves it here and has never asked to go back to her 'home' or cried for her FM. This kid is super resiliant and is probably the easiest transition I've ever seen or heard of. However, the FM was there in case we needed support and the cw originally wanted a longer trans, so it's crazy that you weren't met with the same attitude!

Sony and Sharp end joint LCD venture

Sony and Sharp announced the end to a partnership formed in 2009, when Sony invested $126 million (?80 billion) in Sharp's LCD display business and received a 7 percent stake in the display manufacturer.

The deal started to go really sour when Sony announced in March that they wouldn't inject any more financing into the venture.

And, by September this year they would decide what the future of the two companies' collaboration would be.

That future turned out to be nonexistent, as Sony announced that they'll sell back their 7 percent at a full refund.

Also in March, just before the Sony/Sharp partnership went south, Sharp announced that the electronics manufacturer Foxconn would purchase a 50 percent stake in Sharp for $809.1 million (?515 billion).

The deal was said to facilitate cost-cutting on LCD screen components through bulk purchases from both companies.

Sharp will reportedly continue making large displays, while Foxconn will still stick to smaller screens.

Sony, the jilted lover?

Sony, meanwhile, under the leadership of new CEO Kaz Hirai, announced that they intend to return to profitability this year after seven straight years in the red.

To that end, Sony announced plans last month to axe 10,000 jobs in an ongoing move to reign in the company's ailing TV business. This is the third such mass exodus Sony's seen since 2005.

And just yesterday TechRadar reported that Sony (and Samsung) have begun enforcing minimum prices on televisions to deter retailers from setting competitive, but loss-making, price points.

Another, more positive rumor whispers of a partnership between Sony and Panasonic to begin producing cheaper OLED TVs.

OLED displays are notoriously expensive, but Sony and Panasonic could combine their substantial know-hows to bring that cost down and pass savings onto consumers.

President?s Memorial Day Weekend Remarks?

I?m not going to hammer him. But I think this day was/is meant to honor our dead, not the living. The living have two days devoted to them, this one is for those that gave their last measure of devotion to this country and for those that served and eventually passed on. It is our duty to remember them for their sacrifices.

?Duty then is the sublimest word in the English language. You should do your duty in all things. You can never do more, you should never wish to do less.?
10 points if you guess who said that.

At any rate, here?s President Obama?s remarks:

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
The White House
May 26, 2012

This weekend, folks across the country are opening up the pool, firing up the grill, and taking a well-earned moment to relax. But Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend. In town squares and national cemeteries, in public services and moments of quiet reflection, we will honor those who loved their country enough to sacrifice their own lives for it.

This Memorial Day, Michelle and I will join Gold Star families, veterans, and their families at Arlington National Cemetery. We?ll pay tribute to patriots of every generation who gave the last full measure of devotion, from Lexington and Concord to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Later that day, we?ll join Vietnam veterans and their families at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?the Wall. We?ll begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. It?s another chance to honor those we lost at places like Hue, Khe Sanh, Danang and Hamburger Hill. And we?ll be calling on you?the American people?to join us in thanking our Vietnam veterans in your communities.

Even as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we reaffirm our commitment to care for those who served alongside them?the veterans who came home.? This includes our newest generation of veterans, from Iraq and Afghanistan.

We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us: By making sure that they get the healthcare and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect.

Our men and women in uniform took an oath to defend our country at all costs, and today, as members of the finest military the world has ever known, they uphold that oath with dignity and courage. As President, I have no higher honor than serving as their Commander-in-Chief.? But with that honor comes a solemn responsibility ? one that gets driven home every time I sign a condolence letter, or meet a family member whose life has been turned upside down.

No words can ever bring back a loved one who has been lost. No ceremony can do justice to their memory. No honor will ever fill their absence.

But on Memorial Day, we come together as Americans to let these families and veterans know that they are not alone. We give thanks for those who sacrificed everything so that we could be free. And we commit ourselves to upholding the ideals for which so many patriots have fought and died.

Thank you, God bless you, and have a wonderful weekend.

Good Time Charlie's | A German Expat's Life in Texas

Even if it looks like I?ve only been posting about food and restaurants lately, here?s another posting on those two (related) subjects. Last Sunday we [i.e. Mary, cousins Margaret and Gordon and I] were in San Antonio for a Loretta Lynn concert at the Majestic Theatre [more about that in another posting], and before the concert we had dinner at Good Time Charlie?s on Broadway at the intersection with Mulberry Ave. Mary had often enthusiastically talked about that restaurant and especially their onion rings, and thus we decided to go there for dinner, and were absolutely not disappointed ? quite the contrary.

I?d call it a typical American Diner, non-descript outside and quite unpretentious inside, but with excellent food. We tried the onion rings as appetizers and were not disappointed, neither with the amolunt served nor with the taste: big-sized cuts with a good bite on them still, and crisply fried in a yummy batter. As entree Mary had Hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and green beans wrapped in bacon, Margaret Nachos, Gordon chicken fried steak with French fries and green beans, too, and I had fried catfish with French fries and spinach.

Let?s ust talk about my entree: the fries were as they ought to be [unless you get the much coarser cut "Texas fries"], thinly cut and very crisp, the spinach was sauteed just enough to make it wilt but still with a little bite on it, and the catfish was exactly right ? not dry at all. And it came with a very tasty home-made tartar sauce. The others, btw, were full of praise for their entrees, too.

Again, I?d like to recommend the service at Good Time Charlie?s, which left us enough time to study the menu and then made sure that we had finished our appetizer before she served the main courses. I know that is one of my pet peeves, but I can?t help it.?? ;)

The only criticism is the small size of the tables ? something, too, that I frequently notice in restaurants here in the US. There was barely enough room on our table for the drinks and the main courses, even considering the fact that the latter ? as it?s usually the case hereabouts ? came fully prepared on just one plate, and not, as I?m used to, with the side dishes in separate bowls. Just with the plates of food and the drinks our table was ?at full capacity?. All the more it was really good that we had only been served the main courses after we had finished the appetizer.

Kevin VickersonAP

Despite all the excitement and anticipation in Denver given the arrival of Peyton Manning, the fact remains that:? (1) the schedule is front-loaded with potent offenses; and (2) the Broncos? defense has been suspect at times.

This year, the Broncos are breaking in yet another defensive coordinator, loading up on cornerbacks, and hoping to find a pair of starting defensive tackles.? Gone is Brodrick Bunkley; unsigned is Marcus Thomas.

Kevin Vickerson hopes to fill the void.

After dropping to 275 pounds last year in the hopes of better fitting into the team?s return to a 4-3 front, Vickerson has added a whopping 49 pounds, straining the scale at 324.? As Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post explains it, Vickerson hasn?t simply followed the Joe McKnight McDonald?s diet.? Vickerson?s body fat has plunged from 37 percent to 24.

?Coming off an injury, you could get out of shape with a bad body,? Vickerson said, referring to an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve after only five games.? ?A lot of guys, especially D-tackles, would come back way over-heavy, sloppy, bad weight.? I?ve had that before, and I didn?t want that again.?

Vickerson has had to buy more food with less money.? He agreed to cut his pay from $2.5 million to $1.2 million in order to remain on the roster.

?You have to use your leverage when you have your leverage,? Vickerson said.? ?I was coming off a year of IR.? I didn?t do nothing last year.? I want to earn my money, and if that means I have to earn it again and show, ?Hey I am worth it,? then I?ll get it next year or get a long-term deal sooner rather than later.? A job is a job.? I?d rather take a pay cut and have a job, than not take a pay cut and not have a job and have my wife and kids looking at me like, ?What are we going to do??? You have to be smart about the situation.?

And so Vickerson will vie with rookie Derek Wolfe and veterans Justin Bannan and Ty Warren (if Warren takes a pay cut of his own) and others for a shot to parlay a contract year into a contract large enough to complement his 324-pound frame.

London to become Intel's city-living R&D testbed

Intel is to turn London into a testbed for new technologies that it hopes can make city life more connected and sustainable.

The company announced the creation of the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Sustainable Connected Cities on Thursday. About a dozen researchers will work there, in collaboration with both academia from Imperial College London and University College London and startups in the Tech City hub.

"In 2050, most of the nine billion people in the world will live in cities," Intel Labs director Justin Rattner said in a statement. "Therefore the demands of cities will be highly representative of the demands of humanity. Addressing these demands will be at the heart of the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Sustainable Connected Cities, driving the development of new services to enhance people?s quality of life."

According to Intel, the new institute will try to figure out how technology can solve cities' social, economic and environmental problems.

"Using London as a testbed, researchers will explore technologies to make cities more aware by harnessing real-time user and city infrastructure data," the company said. "For example, a sensor network could be used to monitor traffic flows and predict the effects of extreme weather conditions on water supplies, resulting in the delivery of near real-time information to citizens through citywide displays and mobile applications."

The institute will also "engage with local urban communities to understand how they want to live" and get their input for the resulting technologies.

Intel also announced the establishment of its Intel Labs Europe UK R&D network, of which the London institute will form a part. Other named sites include Brighton, Swindon and Aylesbury. The network will end up with nine locations, and will have an overall remit of researching fields such as information security and high performance computing.

The company also unveiled an even wider Collaborative Research Institute programme, all of which will involve working with universities. Apart from London, Intel also launched similar institutes in Germany and Israel this week.

Although Intel has not said how much the London institute will cost in itself, the company did say on Thursday that it would be putting $40m (?26m) into the wider programme over the next five years.

"Now, more than ever, it is vital that universities collaborate with each other and with businesses on projects such as this," UCL vice-provost Stephen Caddick said. "Delivering research which can be taken out of the lab and onto the market, creating new business opportunities and jobs, and contributing to the growth to the UK economy we so urgently need."

The launch took place at 10 Downing Street, with chancellor George Osborne claiming Intel's move was "recognition of the government's commitment to ensuring that the UK becomes the technology centre of Europe, building on success such as Tech City and the recent investments in supercomputing".

Herbert Hoover's bad rap

Though Roosevelt gets credit for saving the nation, Hoover was far from a 'do-nothing president.'

By John P. Cochran,?Guest blogger / May 25, 2012

In this photo taken June 17, 1931, President Herbert Hoover is seen during a visit to Springfield, Ill., to rededicate Lincoln's Tomb.

Peter Boettke has an excellent commentary over at Coordination Problem, ?Is This How the Myth of the Laissez Faire Herbert Hoover Was Invented??. He concludes, ?Herbert Hoover was as much of a laissez faire president as Barack Obama has been or the leaders in Europe have been. From a free market perspective, the steps taken since 2007 have turned a market correction into an economy wide crisis and then a global crisis. Those steps were anything but ?do nothing,? and they were taken first by a Republican President and then pursued further by a Democratic President. We have never given ?nothing? a chance. But mythologies need to be created in order to tell neat historical tales. Laissez faire Hoover is replaced by activist FDR and the nation is saved.?

Pierre Lemieux in Somebody in Charge: A Solution to Recessions? provides a detailed and enlightening discussion of how the issues Peter raises in his post played out in the recent crisis. Policy failure, not market failure generated the malinvestments and crisis. The rush to do something slowed recovery.

From my review essay (pdf available on request), in The Independent Review ?A Crisis of Authority: Pierre Lemieux?s Somebody in Charge: A Solution to Recessions?, the SUMMARY?

?The roots of the recent financial crisis, according to economist Pierre Lemieux, lay not in greed and self-interest running amuck in unhampered markets, but in the policy and regulatory structure that created and enabled excessive leverage and risk taking. If Lemieux?s latest book were widely read, more people would believe that financial regulators and central banks are not needed to avoid financial crises and economic recessions.

And the conclusion:

?Lemieux?s conclusion that ?The causes and legacy of the economic crisis of 2007-2009 reveal a deeper underlying crisis, which is a crisis of authority? (p. 162). If this book was widely read and widely used in classrooms, it could be very useful in awaking more of the public that we do not need somebody in charge. What we need is ?Wicksteed?s car of collectivism? to ?be stored on a sidetrack? (p. 163).?
