Artist Co-Op Supports Revitalization in Southern Wake | Triangle ...

On a quiet street in downtown Fuquay-Varina, an explosion of art has occurred. Walking through, you?ll see stunning wood burnings and stained glass works, intriguing jewelry, fun and functional pottery, unusual gifts and a terrific collection of paintings and prints in a variety of media.

?I?ve thought about starting something like this for quite some time,? said Linda Johnson, initiator of the organization and principal attorney at Senter, Stephenson, Johnson, PA

What has she started? A local art cooperative. It?s a space where local artisans display their creations of pottery, jewelry, stained glass, paintings in oil, acrylic, water color and mixed media, along with wood burnings, photography, chainmail and more.

You are invited to Artistic Expressions at 118 Raleigh St. in Fuquay-Varina for its grand opening on Sept. 9 from 6 ? 9 p.m. There will be live music, refreshments, demos, door prizes and an opportunity to meet the artists!

As an artists? co-op, Artistic Expressions is set up a bit differently than other galleries. This gallery is an organization with a sustainable model that allows artists to display their wares, and manage the day-to-day operations as well as have a voice in the overall shop management.

Artists pay a modest rental fee each month and participate in running the shop by working the retail side each month. ?Because the program is flexible, you?re likely to find different inventory each time you visit,? says Lauren Brockman, a potter and supporting member.

Sherri Redfield, a wood burner and bead artist says, ?This is a great venue for beginning and experienced artists. The?co-op is an opportunity to join other artists in collaboration; it is very stimulating to the creative mind.?

According to Naomi Riley, Executive Director of Fuquay-Varina Downtown; ?A powerful tool in maintaining a thriving downtown core is the attraction of entertainment, cultural and artistic amenities. Artistic Expressions is a great example of how artists can be supported through a co-op experience, and the community can purchase items made by local craftsmen.?
