At birth, they all have a pretty normal size but they will grow slowly compared to others. As infants, they may have problems in sucking or problems when you feed them. They may also have digesting problems and often constipations. A good news is, they can still develop and do some things normally like crawling, sitting up, walking but in later age compared to others who develop normally.

The symptoms of down syndrome will appear not during infant stage but when the child grows. There are common symptoms where you can distinguish them. Many of them also have medical attentions. They go to therapist and some of them pay much to their doctors for the child just to have developments. Person who has Down syndrome is too flexible, poor muscle tone, some of them has short fingers and also broad hands.

One of the things that you can compare is a slower development than other children around them. For many people, ?what causes Down syndrome?? is a question often asked. The causes of this syndrome are caused by a child born with an extra chromosome. The average person is born with 46 chromosomes.

A person should receive 23 chromosomes from the mother an should also receive 23 chromosomes from the father. But in some cases like this, they receive has an extra chromosome. That means, he/she has 47 chromosomes.

There are currently three types of cell division that causes Down syndrome. These three types of division are Trisomy 21, translocation Down syndrome and Down syndrome Mosaic. Trisomy 21 is the most common form of cell division that can cause Down syndrome. Over 90% of cases of Down syndrome have this type.

A child with this type of cell division has 3 copies of chromosome 21, instead of the usual 2 copies. Trisomy 21 occurs during the sperm cell development or the egg cell development.

Translocation Down Syndrome this type of cell division is an uncommon cause for Down syndrome. This cell division occurs either before or at conception and is caused by part of the chromosome 21 attaching to another chromosome.

What this means is that the child will have the normal two copies of chromosomes, but they will have excess material from the chromosome 21 attached to the trans-located chromosome. This often results in the symptoms of this medical mystery.

Depending on the Down syndrome facts, your doctor will determine the right course for treatment. These treatments will vary depending on facts such as the symptoms, the age of the child and the severity of the condition.
