The Public Correctly Sees Through Pro-Immigration Spin

That's not the conclusion of Joshua Green, writing in the Atlantic. But that's the conclusion to draw after looking at a report he cites as evidence of Americans' ignorance of immigration.

"Asked what they thought was causing the minority boom, 53 percent of whites said illegal immigration, 29 percent said higher birth rates, and 11 percent said legal immigration. 'That has it almost exactly backward,' said Jeffrey Passel, a senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center. Since 2000, Passel says, there have been 19.3 million minority births, 8.4 million legal immigrants, and 5.6 million undocumented immigrants."

But Passel is selectively drawing a line at 2000, when there's no particular reason to do so. In fact, legal and illegal immigration that happened before 2000 account for a substantial percentage of those births - but in the case of illegal aliens, Passel is treating anchor babies the same as children born to citizen parents.
