Stress Management Tips - How to Cope and Survive in a Stressful Job!

You know you've been there, a boss that yells and screams about everything when things don't go right, those co-workers that just won't do their share of the workload or are constantly finding something to complain about or the continued heavy workloads that seem to just drain you of all your energy. It can be overwhelming.

?

Even though your job is what provides you with your income, you still need to realize that you need to limit the amount of stress that you have to deal with on a daily basis. It's simply not a healthy way to live and it makes life a lot less enjoyable. Unfortunately, with a lot of jobs, stress is simply a fact of working life, but this does not mean that you can't find some way to cope with it all so that things can be more manageable and more enjoyable.

?

The first thing that you need to do is to identify the source of the stress.

Does your stress come from something that you can actually control or is it something that is going to require some sort of stress management technique to conquer? Look at the different job related stressors as well as the social stressors of the job. Make sure to look at all of the possible things that might contribute to the stress you are experiencing and see how you can create a plan of action. Sometimes the stress can be caused from lack of communication on the job, frustration with regards to the demands and goals of the job or simply due to too many interruptions that occur throughout the day.

?

You should also not be afraid to ask other people for help. You can prevent a lot of stress if you communicate better with those you work with, including your boss. Make sure to clarify with your boss the rules and guidelines of the job if this might be an issue.

?

Make sure to go over the different goals as well as the demands that relate directly to the position that you have.

Ask for help so that you can develop some sort of plan of action in order for you to more easily obtain the goals that are set for you. Take a closer look at the responsibilities of your job and if possible try and break them down into smaller and simpler tasks. Don't let the negativity that might surround you doing the everyday tasks get in your way either. You need to try on your part to do your best and never be afraid to ask for help if you are feeling overwhelmed.

?

You need to learn to set down boundaries when you are working. Ask that those you work with to respect your privacy. You should also make sure that the area that you work in is set up so that you are able to achieve that privacy while you are working. This will also help with your productivity. If you work in a cubicle then turn your chair away from the opening or if you have your own office space, then close your door when you are trying to work.

?

Figure out ways that are good for you to try and unwind. Consider setting up a regular exercise program for yourself, or when at work, take a walk during your breaks or on your lunch break. Learn some relaxation techniques that you can do even sitting at your desk. One of the best when you have no choice but to stay put is to exercise deep breathing and even a couple of minutes of meditation.

?

Create some sort of support network with someone that you really trust like a friend or your spouse and ask them to help support you when you are trying to handle all of the stress that your job is giving you. You should also spend time with those you feel most comfortable with and balance your work with some fun by doing things that you really enjoy doing when you are not at work.
