'Living with Diabetes' is focus of free Tulsa wellness fair March 23

This event will provide a one-stop opportunity to learn more about fighting diabetes. It's designed as a comprehensive health fair for patients with diabetes and those at risk for diabetes, including educating diabetic patients and their loved ones on how to actively manage and successfully live with diabetes.

Diabetes affects more than 420,000 Oklahomans, and more than 150,000 others have the disease but are undiagnosed and at great risk for developing diabetes-related complications.

With the number of diabetes cases nationwide increasing 90 percent over the past decade, diabetes is the fastest-growing disease in America, with 1.9 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed last year in people ages 20 and older.

At "Living with Diabetes," patients will have the opportunity to be tested and screened by medical experts on the most important measures of health by which all diabetes patients are gauged.

Dr. Raphael Francisco will give a brief presentation. He and a panel of medical experts will answer questions from the audience.

The first 75 attendees will receive free cholesterol screenings. All screenings are free, and results will be recorded on individual report cards.

Attendees are invited to come fasting for accurate test results, with snacks for those who come fasting provided by Roche Diagnostics and Walgreens.

The event cumulates with a presentation by My Fit Foods, which will share its Top 10 secrets to healthy eating, plus a hot food sample.

Major event sponsors include Walgreens, Novo Nordisk and ScanMed QR.

The American Diabetes Association's mission is to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. It funds research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes; delivers services to hundreds of communities; provides objective and credible information; and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes.
