Position Description Summary: The George Washington University Libraries announces an opening for Science and Engineering Reference/Instruction Librarian. We seek collaborative, technologically capable, user-focused applicants who will have the opportunity to develop and implement creative user and data services in the sciences and engineering.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities: The librarian in this newly created position provides research and instruction services to students and faculty in the GWU community. The librarian provides regular reference service including in person service at a desk and /or virtually via email and chat, schedules research consultations, creates research guides in relevant subject areas, and serves as an embedded library liaison in designated academic departments, including the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), as well as science departments in the Columbian School of Arts and Sciences. The librarian assists faculty and research groups with preparation of grant proposal materials, data management plans and supports data curation activities for the community.

As a member of the Instruction team, the librarian participates in the Library?s research education and information literacy program both for freshman writing as well as for students and faculty in science programs, including providing training sessions in specialized library resources, seminar support, workshops and orientations.
This position collaborates with collection development librarians of the GW Libraries to ensure that collections in areas of subject specialization meet the research and curricular needs of the University.
This position serves as a member of the Reference Services Group?s Statistical and Data Services team, providing help to students and faculty to identify appropriate datasets to meet research needs, and to assist in the manipulation of data, and the protocols for the presentation, sharing and preservation of results.
The Science and Engineering Reference and Instruction Librarian maintains professional networks and collaborative relationships with other libraries, and remains current with trends in science librarianship, playing an active leadership and advocacy role within the field.
Some regional travel and evening/weekend hours required.
Minimum Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS
Substantial coursework or library experience or practical lab experience in engineering or science fields, such as biology, physics, chemistry, geology, etc.

Reference, instruction, and/or collection development experience in a science or engineering library
Experience working with statistical data sets.
Demonstrated commitment to customer service and to the promotion of information literacy in the sciences
Evidence of understanding of key issues, ideas, and trends in science and engineering librarianship
Knowledge of print and electronic science reference resources and those available on the Web
Evidence of the ability to work effectively with colleagues in a collaborative team-based organization; and flexibility in adapting to change.
Strong written and oral communication skills
