Product Launch An Album ? Week One & Feeling The Fear | Business ...

?Why ?product launch? Heather?s album at all?? ? you may be asking?. ?A good question and one which I?m sure I?ll be asking myself as the weeks go by, especially as the launch deadline approaches. ?There are a few obvious answers which include:

  1. Maximise sales as early as possible to recoup the costs (pay back investor)
  2. Build a fanbase and list of buyers ready for Album #2
  3. Have the funds to record Album #2 ? which Heather has ?a GREAT idea for, already
  4. Raise Heather?s profile so she gets more paying gigs to fill the classical singing / album / film recording gaps
  5. Give her something to sell at those live gigs which increase the overall takings for the night and make them more worth while
  6. Give her a fighting chance of someone, somewhere hearing it and liking her voice (think Terry Wogan and Eva Cassidy)
  7. To help her to leave a legacy ? she really does have a great voice!

But the real, deep down fundamental answer is that, if she is going to record an album, which has been one of her dreams for years, then the least I can do, having encouraged (bullied?) her into it, is give it the best chance of success and follow SOME system to market it properly.

Because if I don?t step up and do that, it certainly won?t get done. ?Artists are NOT marketers. ?It?s a different kind of creativity.

I know how to do it, and it will be fun to bring Jeff Walker?s Product Launch Formula process to a non-internet marketing / wealth creation type product.

Let?s go a bit deeper about that phrase there ?the best chance of success??..what does THAT mean exactly? ?What would ?success? look like in this context, taking into account my previous blog post about how hard it is to get a record deal nowadays and that Terry is not on the radio anymore that I?m aware of.

Again, it could mean getting favourable reviews in magazines like The Wire, The Musician, Jazz Journal, The Jazz Times?and JazzWise Magazine?which could, in turn, mean more orders for the album through whichever distribution company we decide to go with. ?While Heather is going to sell the MP3 downloads via her site (with special bonuses) and on iTunes etc., there will be actual CD?s for sale in the real world too.

We had an interesting and impromptu conversation over our favourite breakfast, boiled eggs and wholemeal toast, this morning about how terrifying it is, that it?s all actually happening now. ?Once we both admitted the terror was there, I asked Heather over our eggs ?what is the worst that can happen? and really, on a non-emotional level, the worst would be that it didn?t sell a lot or didn?t sell very quickly, didn?t recoup it?s costs, we all felt a bit disappointed and Tom didn?t get his money back as quickly as he?d like.

On an emotional level?..well, I hope she?s going to blog about how she feels about it all, what her fears and definitions of success are, because it?s interesting how we try and self sabotage ourselves from even trying something that may be a roaring success!

I?m usually a VERY confident person but the last couple of years has knocked me back a bit and I?m certainly ?feeling the fear and doing it anyway? about whether I can successfully launch an album ? my definition of success means

  1. sell at least 1000 (if not 5000 ++)
  2. everyone thinks I?ve done a good job
  3. I perhaps attract a client or two out of the process
  4. whether anyone turns up to the launch party!

Hey, that is nearly making this a SMART goal, steady on Nicola!

S = specific

M = measurable

A = achieveable

R = relevant

T = time bound

So, here?s the goal. ?To sell 5000 + albums by Christmas 2011 and prove to the world that I can successfully launch a niche product, and that?s relevant because blogging it will bring traffic and it will be another skill / success story that will attract clients to The Business Success Factory.
