Sandvine report: Apple takes big bite of streaming video | Canadian ...

WATERLOO, ON ? Sandvine has released its internet traffic trends report, entitled Global Internet Phenomena Report 1H2013, based on data from a selection of Sandvine's 200-plus service provider customers spanning?many countries.

These include North America,?Europe,?Middle East?and?Africa, Caribbean and Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Sandvine's Global Internet Phenomena report is published twice a year.

"We predict from this data that 2013 will be the year long-form video will make its move onto mobile networks," said?Dave Caputo, CEO, Sandvine.?? "The "home roaming" phenomenon, the concept of subscribers voluntarily offloading mobile traffic onto Wi-Fi networks, has continued. This combined with increased consumption of real-time entertainment on mobile networks globally, and the doubling of Netflix traffic on mobile networks in?North America, suggests that users are getting comfortable with watching longer form videos on their handheld devices."

Sandvine's Global Internet Phenomena Report 1H2013 findings:

Global data usage

European mobile monthly usage increased 25% to 311MB in just six months

Skype and other communications applications represent over 7% of traffic in Latin America

Filesharing applications like BitTorrent continue to lose share in many regions but still account for 30% of traffic on Asia-Pacific fixed access networks

Tablets and smartphones consume over 20% of all fixed data in?North America

Audio and video streaming

Apple devices (iPads, iPhones, iPods, AppleTVs, and Macs) represent 45% of all audio and video streaming on North American home networks

YouTube accounts for over 20% of mobile downstream traffic in?North America,?Europe?and Latin America

Netflix mobile data usage share doubled in the last 12 months in?North America

SMS revenue leakage on a tier-one European network

For every subscriber on the network, 10 WhatsApp messages are sent and received each day

3% of all WhatsApp messages sent include a media file such as a photo or video

"This is the tenth year we have issued the Global Internet Phenomena Report and have witnessed the peak of file sharing, the introduction of Skype and other communication apps and the dominance of online entertainment, namely streaming video," said?Mr. Caputo.? "Video continues to be the trend to watch as devices and tablets cater to higher definition content with larger screen sizes enabling the market for longer form video on mobile.? World Cup 2014 next June will be the event that shapes the next evolution of streaming video, as we predict it will be the most streamed event to date."

France's Hollande urges euro zone government, common debt

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande called on Thursday for an economic government in the euro zone that would have its own budget, the right to issue debt, a harmonized tax system and a full-time president.

Speaking at a news conference marking his first year in office, a day after economic data showed France had slipped back into recession, the Socialist leader said he sought to create a full political European Union within two years.

His proposals seemed likely to encounter stiff resistance from Germany, Europe's leading power, which opposes mutualising debt among European states and is reluctant to give the euro zone its own secretariat or create new divisions in the EU, of which 10 countries are not in the 17-nation single currency.

It also comes as Britain's government faces growing domestic pressure to hold a referendum on leaving the bloc.

"My initiative has four points that I am putting to our partners. The first is to create an economic government with the euro zone countries which would meet every month with a real president appointed for a long period and who would be devoted to this task," Hollande said.

"This economic government will debate the main political and economic decisions to be taken by the member states, harmonize tax policy, start the convergence of social policies from the top and launch a battle against tax fraud."

The other planks were:

- an initiative to bring forward planned EU spending to combat youth unemployment, now at record levels across southern Europe;

- a European energy community to coordinate the transition to renewable energy sources;

- "a new stage in fiscal integration with a budget capacity that would be granted to the euro zone and the gradual possibility of raising debt".

Hollande, whose approval rating has fallen further than any previous elected president in his first year, sought to reassure his left-wing electorate that he remained true to his Socialist colors, saying France could keep its generous welfare state provided it was made more efficient.

He expressed full confidence in Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and played down criticism of clashes among his ministers on economic policy, saying there might eventually be a reshuffle but not now.

But he said the current pension system was unsustainable and, ahead of a reform due later this year, said the French would have to work longer in future to receive a full pension.

He stuck to a promise to reverse the rising trend in unemployment by the end of the year, despite widespread skepticism among economists that this can be achieved while the economy remains flat.

He also called for a 10-year public investment plan in the digital sector, the promised energy transition, public health and in big transport infrastructure projects.

Hollande said it was paradoxical that Europe, which remained the world's number one economic power, was regarded "as a sick, declining, doubting continent.

"It is my responsibility as the leader of a founder member of the European Union... to pull Europe out of this torpor which has gripped it, and to reduce people's disenchantment with it."

Suspect arrested in New Orleans Mother's Day shooting

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans police arrested a man identified in connection with a shooting at a Mother's Day parade in which 19 people were injured, authorities said late on Wednesday.

Akein Scott, 19, was arrested in the Little Wood neighborhood of eastern New Orleans, police spokesman Garry Flot said, adding that no other details would be released until morning.

Seven women, 10 men, a girl and a boy were shot when gunfire erupted at the parade on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the city. The children were grazed, and three of the victims remain hospitalized in a stable to critical condition. The others have been released.

Police identified Scott on Monday as a suspect in the shooting. They did not say how he was apprehended.

Police had released photos earlier on Monday from surveillance video that showed a person they considered a suspect, which led to tips and Scott's identification. Police also announced a $10,000 reward for information that might help find the shooter.

Violent crime in New Orleans ranks above the national average in FBI surveys. A poll of residents in 2010 found crime to be their greatest concern.

In February, four people were wounded in a shooting outside a nightclub in the city's French Quarter as crowds gathered for Mardi Gras celebrations.

Google changelog reveals upcoming Chrome devices with Star Fox-inspired codenames

Upcoming Google Chrome x86 devices get Star Foxinspired codenames

Though we know virtually nothing about any Chrome OS-based devices in development at Google, we at least know what their engineers are calling them. Google insider François Beaufort revealed that developers working on such projects might be Star Fox fans, as several possible x86 devices seem to bear the Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy monikers, according to a recent changelog. None of this is proof of any future products, of course, but Fox and Slippy seem to be Haswell-equipped, according to Beaufort -- which would be a nice step up from their 1993-era Nintendo graphics power.
